Here's how our 5th Annual Northland Hackathon ran — one full day, online via Zoom and Discord. Students formed teams, built projects from scratch, and presented to judges, with mentors from top tech companies standing by all day. Expect a similar format when we return in 2027.

What does each block look like?

Opening (10–11am): Welcome, introductions, team formation. If you don't have a team, we'll help you find one. Mentors introduce themselves and you'll get set up on Discord.

Team Time (11am–1pm & 1:30–4pm): This is where the magic happens. Your team builds a project — a website, an app, a tool, anything. Mentors are available the entire time to help with code, design, or strategy.

Lunch (1–1:30pm): Take a break. Grab food. Stretch. We'll have a casual chat going on Discord.

Presentations (4–5pm): Every team presents their project to the judges. Keep it short — 3 minutes max. Judges ask questions, then we announce prizes and wrap up.

Tips for Hackathon Day

No experience? No problem.

Most participants have never coded before. Mentors are here to help you from zero. You'll learn by doing.

Come with ideas (or don't)

Some teams know exactly what they want to build. Others figure it out on the spot. Both approaches work.

Keep it simple

The best hackathon projects solve one problem well. A working demo beats a fancy pitch deck every time.
